Accounting in Finland

Accountancy in Finland is subject to the Accounting Act (1336/1997) and Accounting Decree (1339/1997). An expert accounting firm can be identified by its membership of the Association of Finnish Accounting Firms. Member companies must fulfill strict membership requirements and meet high professional standards.

In Finland auditing and accounting/bookkeeping are strictly divided into two separate professions.

All companies must keep records of their accounts. The obligation to keep books starts with the founding of an enterprise. The accounts must be arranged in a competent and reliable manner.

The accounting period for businesses in Finland is generally 12 months. For self-employed people, the accounting period is the calendar year.

The annual financial statement includes the profit and loss account, balance sheet, financing statement and supplementary information. The accounting books, the balance book, balance sheet itemisations and notes to the financial statements, as well as a list of accounts with comments indicating their period of use, must be kept for at least 10 years after the end of the accounting period, arranged so that the method of information processing is self-evident.
